Five things I understand
1. Parson was a person that lost wife and son to the scarlet fever and was soon to be another victim of the yellow fever.
2. The parade started, there were many people there having fun.
3. While all these festivities were going on a ship meet sail carrying hundreds of mosquito eggs ready to hatch.
4. The mosquitoes were living on the ship. The male mosquitoes would feed from the rotten fruits and the impregnated females from the blood of humans. That was the way that the yellow fever was caught by so many people. Aedes aegypti is the name of the mosquito that carried the yellow fever virus.
5. To be immune or used to some diseases in the Caribbean was almost like a rite of passage.
Four Questions I have
1. How many people suffered from yellow fever?
2. Is there a cure on this day?
3. Will another epidemic that that one ever happens again?
4. Did the people know that the mosquitoes were passing the virus along.
Three Vocabularies
1. Lax pg 41: Lay back
2. Goatee pg 41: small chin beard trimmed into a point; named for its resemblance to a goat's beard
3. Vindictive pg 42: Malicious
Two literaly elements
1. “Turquoise sky as beautiful as a summer day” Crosby 25). This is a simile, it is comparing something using like or as.
2. There is dramatic irony on page 40. There isn’t however an exact quote. It’s just that the author is talking about how the people didn’t know about the fever epidemics that was going to strike and yet the reader does know that’s its going to happen.
One sentence summary
1. The author starts getting more into when the epidemics started happening and how the people weren’t prepared.
