Pg 1-23
Five things I understand
1. I understand that in 1778 was when the yellow fever epidemic struck.
2. A girl named Lena survived the yellow fever, later in life became a nurse stationed in Cuba.
3. There were eggs in trees that got water where mosquitoes grew in Nigeria, Africa. A Virus is one of the smallest beings in evolution’s survival of the fittest. A virus becomes alive by possessing something.
4. Africans, where the disease started had acquired immunity to yellow fever. Slaves were taken from Africa and given to Europeans.
5. The book started introducing Memphis, talking about a carnival that many were invited to. It was though that Memphis was a place that couldn’t distinct the difference between progress and prosperity.

Two literally elements
1. “A massive wind blew in from the Atlantic cost bringing the deluge of water…it swelled…rives…filled the flood plains and swamplands…purpled the sky and saturated the country” (Crosby 7). This quote has personification. It says that it purpled the sky with it can’t really do.
2. The second literally element is that the book is told in third person. This is called point of view.
One sentence summary
1. on the first 23 pages the book gives and introduction to yellow fever and places that it has affected.
