The American Plague Sixth Journal Entry

Pg 115-138
Five things I understand
1. New sanitations methods were taken to the soldiers since they thought that that would be a method so that the soldiers could better be protected from disease.
2. Camp Columbia’s focus was the treatment for the soldiers.
3. 1,900 Americans had yellow fever in Cuba. They were part of the 15,000 people that were left to take care of the disease in Cuba.
4. Lazear was doctor that worked in Cuba with the yellow fever. He had a wife that was pregnant and sent them to New York since he heard that the yellow fever season was coming.
5. Lazear was keeping note of the mosquitoes and that I think will lead him to understanding the causes of yellow fever.
Four questions I have
1. Do many words have more than one meaning?
2. Does Lazear ever get to understand and find the connection between the mosquitoes and the yellow fever?
3. Who made the yellow fever board?
4. When was it that a cure for yellow fever was found?
Tree Vocabularies
1. Convalescent pg 120: restorative
2. Prone pg 122: Flat
3. Prolific pg 123: Productive
Two literally elements
1. “The scent of over ripened pineapples in nearby fields sugared the air, but beneath the sweetness, the chemicals were pungent”. Pg 120 I think that this would be personification. It if giving a characteristic to air when it doesn’t really have the description that it was given.
2. “A chill imbued the inky sky” (Crosby 123). This is a metaphor. It is calling the sky inky.
One summary sentence
1. The doctors are beginning to advance more in finding the cause of yellow fever.
