Five things I understand p 58-116
1. Gogol’s parents wanted him to be called Nikhil at school but then the teacher decided to call him Gogol, since he preferred it. It made me really mad that the Americans didn’t understand the feelings that the Indians have about the pet names and who can call them.
2. Ashima had another baby.
3. At a ceremony, she played with the mud and dollar and refused the food. Gogol hadn’t played with anything at all.
4. Gogol is growing up and is starting to see the discrimination shown against the Indians.
5. Gogol goes to a cemetery but doesn’t find his name. He thinks that his name is weird. Gogol starts going out with Ruth.

Three Literally elements
1. “Lingering sadness” pg 87. This is personification, a sadness cannot literally linger like a person can.
2. “Thick clouds conceal the sky, which appears only here and there like the small lakes on a map” pg 102. This is a simile. It is comparing something using like or as.
3. “Setting sun feverishly beautiful” pg 111 this is imagery. It is describing the sun.

1. On these pages we learn more about the life of Gogol as a young adult and the hardships that he goes through being an Indian.
