Five things I understand
1. Dicey finally found her grandmother.
2. I think that the grandmother is a stubborn person. She seems like she doesn’t want the children there but then she offers meals.
3. Maybeth was able to talk by herself when the grandma asked if she was retarded. Dicey is taking too much care of her so Maybeth doesn’t get the opportunity often.
4. Dicey started to wandered about what is was that her grandma wanted to do with them.
5. I think that the grandma will end up wanting the children to stay to some extent.
Four questions I have
1. At the beginning did Dicey know that the lady in the farm was the grandma?
2. Will Dicey ever see her father again?
3. Is their mom going to get better?
4. When is Dicey’s birthday?
Three Vocabularies
1. Slate pg 244: a fine-grained metamorphic rock that splits easily into layers and is widely used as a roofing material
2. Traipsed pg 250: to walk around casually or without a specific destination
3. Loomed pg 260: to be imminent, often in a threatening way
Two literally elements
1. “Gulls wheeled in the air and rode, with folded wings, on the waves.” pg 258, this is personification. The gulls aren’t really wheeling in the air.
2. “Evening fell across the water” pg 266, this is personification since evening cannot really fall.
