Homecoming 6th journal entry

Pg 151-181
Five things I understand
1. The cousin was planning on adopting Dicey, but not sure about Sammy and Maybeth. She said that Sammy was misbehaving and that she had given up being a nun for the children’s sake.
2. The mother was finally found in a hospital in Ma. She was catatonic which is when a patient doesn’t respond to anything nor does anything. So far the doctors think that it’s incurable.
3. The Tillermans decided to go and see the place were their grandma lives. Dicey left a note to her cousin saying that she shouldn’t worry about them and to where she was heading.
4. Dicey had a lot of pressure put on her since she to take care of her family again and didn’t want to use all her money.
5. Because of the pressure Dicey got on a bus that was going to make her journey to her grandma’s house longer.
Four questions I have
1. Will the grandma be there?
2. How will the cousin react?
3. How is it that no one has said anything about the kids traveling by themselves?
4. Will Dicey’s mom ever recover from what she has?
Three vocabularies
1. Primly pg 149: excessively formal and proper in manner or appearance
2. Tenuous pg 169: not based on anything significant or substantial, and therefore unlikely to stand up to rigorous examination
3. Teeming pg 169: to have an extremely large number of people, animals, or things in a place
Two literally elements
1. “The morning sun had to burn its red path through low-hanging hazes and clouds of industrial smoke.” pg 148, this is foreshadowing. The reason is that it’s saying that the sun burnt in a road. That means that the kids will have to travel again.
2. “Its red path through low-hanging hazes” pg 148, this is personification. The reason is that the sun cannot burn itself up.
One summary sentence
1. On this section you see how Dicey was able to find out about her mom and cope with her family situation.
