Journey Toward Freedom Second journal entry

Pg50-100
Five things I understand
1. Dumont sold Belle’s son Peter. He was four years old when that happened. He was born free but his rights could still be sold I guess.
2. Belles’ master said that if she worked hard that he would free her one year before the due date. The master lied to her and for the first time Belle saw her master as someone normal and not high and mighty.
3. Belle and her baby were sold to Isaac Van Wagenen and his wife Maria for 25 dollars. They were Quakers.
4. Belle son was sold to southerners. Now he could never be free if he stayed there. She made a complaint to the office and her son was brought back but not given to her.
5. Belle was able to get her son back.
Four Questions I have
1. How did Levi Rowe know of the people that could help Belle?
2. What happened to the children that Belle left behind?
3. Did they hold a grudge against their mom for leaning them?
4. How was it that Belle heard of Jesus?
Three Vocabularies
1. Lanky pg 59: Awkward, tall and thin
2. Clambered pg 73:To climb with difficulty, especially on all fours; scramble
3. Affable pg 77: pleasant and easygoing
Two literally elements
1. Pg 58 “The first rays were barely touching the ridges across the Hudson when Belle’s lanky figure carefully stepped through the door” this is personification.
2. pg 67 “the trees they waved and waved in glory, and every little bit of stone on the ground shone like glass” this is both personification and a simile.
One sentence summary
1. Belle was able to win a case without being able to read of write and without even having proper clothing.
